MAHJONG ON ZOOM

I teach American mahjong live on Zoom to beginners anywhere in the US. Mahjong private lessons run 90 minutes, group classes run 60, and both use the same Mahjong Made Simple method I teach in person.

Two ways to learn on Zoom.

Plus one for teams.

Does mahjong really work on Zoom?

Better than you'd think.

You set up your own tiles and play along with me. I teach on camera with screen sharing and teaching tiles, and you try each step at your table before we move on.

The rules, the card and the Charleston all translate well to a screen. What Zoom can't give you is the chatter of a full table, so once you've learned, I'll point you to open play or a game near you.

What you need

  • An American mahjong set: 152 tiles (8 jokers) and 4 racks with pushers. An Amazon starter set works fine. See my favorite sets
  • This year's National Mah Jongg League card. No card yet? I send a practice card before your lesson.
  • A laptop or tablet where I can see you, and a little elbow room.

Who Zoom is perfect for

  • You're nowhere near a mahjong class.
  • You played years ago and want a private refresher before your friends notice.
  • Your group lives in different states and wants to learn together.
  • Your calendar runs at the exact hour every local class does.

What Zoom students say.

From Google reviews, in their own words.

"Gaia helped me immensely. She calmly answered my questions and could tell when I was getting a little tense. Her positive attitude made me want to try harder."

"Today's lesson with Gaia was so helpful. She started at the beginning learning the tiles which in itself made more sense to us. Oh Yes thanks to Gaia I see the light at the end of the Mahjong Tunnel! Hungry for more!"

Questions about Zoom lessons.

Is learning mahjong on Zoom as effective as in person?

For the rules, the card and the Charleston, yes. You handle real tiles the whole time. In-person play adds speed and table talk, so many students do both.

Do I need my own mahjong set?

Yes. You'll need a set with 152 tiles and 4 racks. A starter set from Amazon is plenty.

Can friends in different states join one lesson?

Yes. Each home needs its own set, and everyone joins the same Zoom link.

What time zone are lessons in?

Times are listed in Eastern. I teach students across the US, so pick what works where you are.

Do I need this year's card?

It helps, but no. I send a downloadable practice card before your lesson.

How much is a Zoom lesson?

Mahjong private lessons on Zoom are $120 for 90 minutes. Group Zoom classes are $58 for 60 minutes.
