Hi, I’m Gaia
I’m the founder of Master Your Mahjong, and my favorite thing in the world is helping new players discover just how fun and approachable this beautiful game can be.
Like many people, I first fell in love with Mahjong out of pure curiosity. But very quickly it became something much bigger - a source of laughter, connection, and the kind of social magic that only happens around a Mahjong table.
And lately, Mahjong has been having quite a moment. Everywhere you look, people are discovering the game and gathering around the table to play.
As Mahjong’s popularity has grown, one thing has become very clear. Many beginners are eager to learn… but often feel unsure about where to begin or how to build real confidence with the game.
Mahjong is wonderfully rich and layered, and while many people know how to play, explaining the game clearly to beginners is an art in itself. Over the years, after teaching hundreds of new players, my approach makes the learning process feel logical, manageable, and even fun.
Mahjong Made Simple, my signature learning method, is designed to help beginners understand the game step by step, with clear explanations and plenty of those wonderful “aha!” moments along the way.
No pressure.
No intimidation.
Just a welcoming path into the game.
A few things that might reassure you
Over the years, I’ve had the joy of helping hundreds of beginners learn Mahjong with confidence and building a welcoming Mahjong community here in Tampa Bay.
Along the way, I’ve also become:
• Certified American Mahjong Instructor
• Founding Member of the Mahj Life Instructors Guild
• 2025 American Mah Jongg Association Favorite Instructor nominee
But my real superpower?
Helping new players feel calm, capable, and excited - even if they’ve never touched a Mahjong tile before.
My mission
Whether we’re learning together in St. Petersburg, Tampa Bay, or on Zoom, my goal is simple:
To help you discover Mahjong as a joyful, social hobby that brings people together and keeps your mind engaged.
Because Mahjong isn’t just a game.
It’s laughter around the table.
New friendships.
And a hobby you’ll enjoy for years to come.

I bring decades of experience presenting to discerning audiences, mentoring teams, and delivering exceptional client service in demanding corporate environments. Originally from Slovenia, I spent many years in New York City working in the fine art world before moving to Florida. Along the way, I built businesses, led teams, and became known for turning complex ideas into clear, confident action.
Teaching has always been at the heart of what I do.
Then I discovered American Mahjong - and I was completely captivated. I fell in love with the strategy, the rhythm of the game, and the connections around the table. But I didn’t stop at learning to play well. I studied how to teach it well - how to make Mahjong feel clear, approachable, and even joyful for beginners.
Today, as a Certified American Mahjong Instructor and founder of Master Your Mahjong in St. Petersburg, I teach with warmth, structure, and encouragement. My signature Mahjong Made Simple method helps everyone build confidence quickly - without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated.
If you’re sitting at my table, you can expect clarity, patience, a little sparkle, and plenty of support as you get your Mahj on.

After more than 40 years as a Registered Nurse and earning my Doctoral Degree in Nursing Practice - including over 20 years teaching emergency nurses and physicians at a large metropolitan medical center - I built my career around education, mentorship, and calm leadership in high-pressure environments.
Throughout my career, I trained healthcare professionals to think critically, stay focused, and make confident decisions under pressure. My teaching style is clear, structured, supportive, and encouraging - strengths I now bring to teaching Mahjong.
In retirement, while staying active with pickleball and golf, I discovered Mahjong as a way to keep my mind sharp. I was self-taught at first and quickly captivated, developing a deep appreciation for the game’s strategy, mental challenge, and social connection.
I understand that Mahjong can feel overwhelming to beginners. By combining decades of teaching experience with patience and enthusiasm, I strive to make learning approachable and enjoyable. My classes provide a welcoming environment where students build confidence, develop strategy, and enjoy the game - one hand at a time.
