This class is for you if

  • You've never played and you're starting from zero.
  • You played once years ago and none of it stuck.
  • You've watched friends play and quietly decided you'd never catch up.
  • You own a set that's still in its box.

What you'll learn

  • The tiles, the suits and what the jokers can do
  • How to read the National Mah Jongg League card
  • How to set up, deal and run the Charleston
  • The basic rhythm of a turn, so you can keep playing on your own

I teach with my Mahjong Made Simple method, which means I leave out everything you don't need on day one. You'll have tiles in your hands in the first fifteen minutes.

Questions about Mahjong 101.

I've never played. Is Mahjong 101 really for me?

Yes. It's for complete beginners. I start at the very beginning and skip anything you don't need yet.

I played years ago. Should I take 101 or 102?

Start with 101. If it all comes back fast, email me before you book and we'll see if 102 fits better.

What's the difference between Taste of Mahjong and 101?

Taste is a relaxed 90 minutes to see if mahjong is your game. 101 is 2.5 hours, and it's where you learn to play.

Can I come by myself?

Yes, and many people do. You'll sit with other new players and may leave with your future mahjong group.

Do I need to buy this year's card?

Not for class. Once you start playing on your own, you'll want your own copy, and I'll show you where to get one.

What if the class doesn't fill?

If fewer than 6 people sign up, I move your seat to another date and email you first.
