The Mahjong Made Simple Method: Why Most Beginners Struggle

I walked out of my first mahjong lesson in 2019 more confused than when I walked in. I had been handed the whole card, every rule, the Charleston, the Jokers and the exceptions, all before I had played a single hand. I went home discouraged and fairly sure I wasn't a mahjong person.

It turns out I was. I just hadn't been taught like one yet.

What went wrong (and still goes wrong)

Most beginners aren't struggling with the game. They're struggling with the way it's introduced. The usual first lesson pours everything onto the table at once, then wonders why nobody can pick it back up.

It's a bit like learning to cook by reading the whole cookbook before you boil an egg. Every recipe is in there. None of them help you tonight.

The 2026 card has 55 lines. On your first day you need about eight of them.

So I built something different

I started teaching in 2023 with one rule for myself: give beginners only what they need to sit down and play a real game. Nothing more, nothing less. That rule became Mahjong Made Simple, the method behind every class I teach.

It rests on three ideas.

1. Meet the tiles as families. Three suits, numbers one through nine, and a few tiles that sit beside them. If you can count to nine, you can do this. When the tiles stop looking like hieroglyphics, everything else gets easier.

2. Read the card like a map. I teach the card as a city with neighborhoods, and a beginner only needs to know her way around a few of them. The rest of the city will still be there next month.

3. Sort your rack into keep and let go. Before the Charleston, your rack splits into what stays and what goes. Suddenly the Charleston stops being a panic and starts being a plan.

That's the outline. The details live at the table, where they actually make sense.

What it looks like in a real class

Mahjong 101 is 2.5 hours. We start with the tiles, move to the card, sort a rack, and then we play. Not a pretend game. A real one, start to finish, before anyone goes home.

I have taught more than 3,000 women this way since 2023. The ones who tried to learn everything at once tend to stall. The ones who start simple are still at the table.

What it isn't

Simple doesn't mean shallow. Strategy, defense and the rest of the card come later, in Mahjong 102 and Strategy Lab, once the basics feel like yours.

It also doesn't mean you'll never feel lost again. You will, usually around the second Charleston. That part is called playing.

Your first move

If you're anywhere near Tampa Bay, pick a Mahjong 101 date and come play your first real game. If you're not, a private lesson on Zoom gets you to the same place from your own kitchen table.
