Mahjong reference card and colorful acrylic racks set up for a beginner class in St. Petersburg, FL

GUIDED PLAY · PRACTICE WITH HELP NEARBY

Real games, with help at the table.

Guided Play is two hours of full American mahjong games with other learners, and I'm at the table when you need help. It's for players who already know the basics, from my Mahjong 101 or a class elsewhere, and it's just as useful after 102.

Sound familiar?

After class, the group chat lights up with "game Thursday?" Then everyone sits down, and nobody can remember which way the Charleston goes.

Guided Play is the in-between. You play full games with other learners, and help is right there at the table.

How it works

  • You play full games, start to finish, at a table of learners.
  • Not sure whether to call that tile? Ask. You get the why, then you make the call.
  • Less lecture, more games.
  • Come once or come often. No two games are alike, so it never repeats itself.

Questions about Guided Play.

What's the difference between Guided Play and Open Play?

Open Play has no lesson and nobody teaching. At Guided Play I'm at the table, so you can ask about any tile and get the why.

What's the difference between 102 and Guided Play?

102 teaches the next layer of the game, and we start looking at strategy. Guided Play is mostly full games, with me at the table when you need help.

Do I need to take your 101 first?

Not if you learned the basics somewhere else. You do need to know the fundamentals, though. Guided Play isn't a first class, so if you've never touched a tile, start with Mahjong 101.

Can I come more than once?

Yes. Most people come a few times.

Can I come by myself?

Yes. Tables form from who signs up, and you'll play with other learners at your level.
