Free Mahjong Open Play in St. Pete and Pinellas County

Weekly games for women who know the basics and want a seat at a friendly table

The hardest part of mahjong usually isn't the Charleston or the Jokers. It's finding three other people who are free on the same afternoon.

That's why I run free open plays around St. Pete every week. You show up, I seat you at a table, and you play.

What open play is

Open play is unstructured play for women who already know the game. There's no lesson and no lecture, just real games with whoever came that day.

You don't need a group, a partner, or a standing invitation. Most women come on their own, and plenty of them now have a regular table because of it.

Where and when

  • Dillard's Tyrone Square: Wednesdays from 1 to 3 PM, plus the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month from 2 to 4 PM

  • SkyBar and Grill: Mondays from 4:30 to 6:30 PM

I also host one-off open plays at The Library Restaurant, The Blu Halo, Paloma House, Pour & Décor, and AR Workshop St. Petersburg. Those dates go on my calendar as they're set.

Starting Out or Seasoned?

I set up two kinds of tables. The Starting Out table is for newer players who want a calmer pace and don't mind someone checking the card twice, and the Seasoned Table is for women who've been playing a while and like to keep things moving.

You pick the one that fits, and you can switch whenever you're ready. Nobody gets graded on which table she chose.

What to bring

Bring your 2026 card. If you're still using an old one, this is your sign, since the hands change every year and last year's card won't match what everyone else is playing.

Reserve your seat on my open play page so I know how many tables to set. A few partner venues take their own reservations, and the page tells you where to sign up for each one.

If you're nervous about your first open play

You'll be slower than you'd like, and that's fine. Everyone at the Starting Out table was slow once, and most of them still check the card more than they'd admit.

If it's been a while since your class, my post on what a first class looks like is a quick refresher. And if you'd like a coach at the table for a game or two first, Guided Play is the in-between step.

Save your seat

Pick one open play this month and reserve your seat today, before the week fills up with everything else. A few games at a real table will teach you more than another month of meaning to.
